Denmark increases support to Ukraine and Moldova's refugee response
On 24 February 2026, four years have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since that day, Ukraine has fought courageously to defend its sovereignty and contribute to the security of Europe. Denmark continues to stand firmly with Ukraine and its people.
Since the beginning of the invasion, approximately 2.4 million Ukrainian refugees have entered Moldova, with nearly 150,000 remaining in the country. In response to the continued humanitarian needs, Denmark has announced an additional EUR 25 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Moldova.
The support to Moldova will assist national authorities in managing the increased influx of refugees, aligning the asylum system with EU acquis requirements, and providing essential services and basic necessities to Ukrainian refugees transiting through or seeking longer-term protection in Moldova.
The Ambassador of Denmark to Moldova, Mr Søren Jensen, states:
“At a time when global humanitarian funding is under increased pressure and conflicts are becoming more protracted and complex, leadership and solidarity matter more than ever. Denmark stands shoulder to shoulder with Moldova in addressing the needs of Ukrainians who have been forced the flee the war. With this increased support, Denmark is not only responding to urgent humanitarian needs — we are also reinforcing Moldova’s security and its path toward European integration.”
Background
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine, Denmark has provided more than EUR 10.5 billion in support to Ukraine. In addition, Denmark has contributed over EUR 60 million to Moldova in support of security and EU accession efforts.
Of the newly announced EUR 25 million in humanitarian funding, EUR 3.3 million will be allocated to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including approximately EUR 700,000 specifically earmarked for UNHCR’s operations in Moldova.
